Join David Jo, founder and artist behind Flint and Marble, for a hands-on introduction to nerikomi, the Japanese art of building patterns directly into clay using layers of color. David discovered the technique while traveling through Korea and was immediately drawn to the idea that color and pattern could become part of the material itself—not simply decoration added to the surface.

In this workshop, David will guide you through working with colored clay to build, layer, slice, and arrange patterns before transforming them into your own functional ceramic pieces. Because the design runs through the clay itself, every cut reveals something a little different, and no two finished pieces are ever quite alike.

David is a thoughtful and approachable teacher whose background in organizational psychology comes through in the way he teaches: clear, collaborative, and welcoming to all experience levels. No previous clay experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Your finished work will be fired and glazed by Gather and ready for pickup after the workshop.

If you've never taken a class with Jessy Campbell (@messyjessyceramics) don't miss this one. In this hands-on marbling workshop, we’ll explore how multiple clay bodies can be combined on the wheel to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind patterns through color, contrast, and movement. Jessy will guide students through choosing compatible clay bodies, different approaches to combining them, and techniques for throwing marbled forms while still allowing the clay to do something unexpected.

We’ll work with a selection of three clay bodies, giving you the chance to experiment with new materials and see how each behaves when layered and thrown together. Expect a mix of technical instruction and playful exploration, with plenty of room to test ideas and develop your own approach. 

Students will be granted 3 hours of additional studio time to  trim their pieces once leather hard, before firing. Clay, tools, and firing are included in the price of the workshop.

Students should feel comfortable throwing a 4-inch cylinder. Come ready to experiment and see where the clay takes you!
