Nerikomi with David Jo [Flint & Marble]

Join David Jo, founder and artist behind Flint & Marble, for a hands-on introduction to nerikomi, the Japanese art of building patterns directly into clay using layers of color. David discovered the technique while traveling through Korea and was immediately drawn to the idea that color and pattern could become part of the material itself—not simply decoration added to the surface.

In this workshop, David will guide you through working with colored clay to build, layer, slice, and arrange patterns before transforming them into your own functional ceramic pieces. Because the design runs through the clay itself, every cut reveals something a little different, and no two finished pieces are ever quite alike.

David is a thoughtful and approachable teacher whose background in organizational psychology comes through in the way he teaches: clear, collaborative, and welcoming to all experience levels. No previous clay experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Your finished work will be fired and glazed by Gather and ready for pickup after the workshop.
